Millar has crafted a world much like our own except there's no hero coming to our rescue. Only brave men and women that comprise our law enforcement agencies. Nemesis decides to make one such man his next target and after recruiting a team of criminal savants, he begins a campaign of terror with absolutely no boundaries. His assets and assistants helps him evade capture at every turn . Nemesis Mark Millar Daniel Ketchum Nick Lowe 9780857681072 Books Reviews
After reading Kick Ass and Kick Ass 2 (excited for the movie) I decided to check out more of Millar's work. Without much thought, I bought Nemesis hoping it would be good. I loved everything about it and there are twists everywhere throughout the entire comic. I really hope this will be made into a major movie.
This is a great self contained story arc that requires no previous knowledge or reading (like many comics do) and I have to say its a really good one. It's what you get if Bruce Wayne decided to be a super villian instead of Batman but with the same moral ground as the Joker. It's gripping and fun to read with amazing art work. The only problem is the sequel is going to take a very long time to come out, if at all, and there need to be more comics like this.
Every trip to Millar World book brings a little something different to the table. They are ALL over the top. But they all tell a unique story, that's a twitsed take on the genre. "Wanted" was basically if "What if the Villains won?" "Kick-Ass" was "What if a teenager decided to be a vigilante?" "Superior" is "Does great power really come with great responsiblity?" and with "Nemesis" we have "what if the world's greatest mind was a villain?" Seriously! If Batman was a completely psychopathic killer. And they play full on!! McNiven's art is super detailed and it just adds to the story, and the end is just the icing on the cake.
Bring on "SuperCrooks"
Despite his ego, Mark Millar has written some good/great stuff. He has written Wolverine, Spider-Man, Civil War and a few Ultimate titles(don't really care for The Ultimates though). Nemesis, while not a bad read, isn't one of Millar's best works either. The character Nemesis is basically the opposite of Batman or Batman & the Joker mashed together. Nemesis hunts down police chiefs, and has his sights on the Chief of Police in D.C. One of the problems I had with this is that it was too short. I felt that if this story spanned 8 issues instead of 4, the characters would've be more developed. The other thing was some of the violence. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the blood & the guts(I loved Ennis run on The Punisher MAX series). That being said, some of the violence is TOO over the top. Despite those complaints, Nemesis has some good action, a couple of nice twists, and the art by McNiven is great. IDK about buying this. There are better books by Millar that's worth buying. Maybe borrow this from a friend, library, or somewhere.
SN This is also being made into a movie(along with other works by Millar) by Joe Carnahan.
A quick story of murder and mayhem as a deranged madman is tracking down lawmen around the world. This killer (who is pretty much Moon Knight) has all the money and tech he could need as he goes head to head with the top officer in DC. Nemesis will go to any length to torture his target before the kill and has everyone in the country (and Asia) after him, can he be brought down before he spree spreads further?!
The story gives you enough twists and turns with blood and guts abound to leave you satisfied with this speedy read.
It was a really dark story with a great twist at the end. People keep comparing Nemesis to Batman and honestly I don't see it beyond the obvious rich orphan thing, keep in mind I have read over 20 Batman series. Nemesis is not a vigilante, I would put him more in the personality realm with the Joker, he is no where near as funny as Lobo or Deadpool, but he is a super sinister monster. I recommend this read to anyone who liked the Walking Dead, The Long Halloween, or has a love of dark gorge art.
Mark Millar's Nemesis is a bit of a rollercoaster ride; that is, if the rollercoaster shot you in the chest at pointblank range, tossed your body off the tracks from 200 feet up, then proceeded to kill your whole family, and burn down an orphanage.
Although the above statement may seem a bit, well, harsh, the book itself is...fun. It makes you question your morality in its sense of humor. The book follows a rich, bored, clearly insane man in a white Batman-without-the-ears type of custom, who catches a pants-tent by going around murdering police commissioners.
Yeah - that's about it, but it is a must read. The art is phenomenal, and the story itself has plenty of unexpected "Oh, Crap!" moments. Plus, come on, it's Mark Millar!
